Buying Roses – Online Vendors

Renegade Solarz

Renegade Bill and Anita Solarz Miniflora Prince

What you need:
 A personal computer with an internet connection, and an email address. Cable connection recommended. Well if you are reading this,  you have one of these at least.  Please note that this was converted from a printed presentation but I just thought I’d say it anyway.
 A landline telephone or wireless phone connection (not all companies have toll free numbers)
 Both are nice
 A friend who has either one or both
 A mailing address that is NOT a P.O. Box although I am noticing that this isn’t a limitation in many cases anymore

Please offer any opinions you have about the active vendors (I did say something about one of the closed ones). Being the opinionated one that I am when it comes to ordering roses and other gardening supplies, I will offer my opinions , who is good, who is ok, who to avoid at all costs. You may disagree and are free to do so. Let the webmaster (guess who?) know and I will add you to our online list so you can leave comments.

Always keep a list of your orders with ORDER NUMBERS, with phone numbers and/email addresses. Follow up! Don’t assume they have your order if you don’t have a confirmation email or letter from the company. It’s your job to keep track of your orders.

Watch the shipping and handling! This can be steep. You have to pay sales taxes in most states now. I’m only quoting domestic shipping. Alaska and Hawaii are not considered domestic when it comes to shipping. Don’t laugh. Landscape Alaska sells roses. Albeit, VERY hardy roses, but they do sell them. International shipping (including Canada) is a whole other issue. Palatines is on this list but only because we order from them as a club. They are still considered international by definition.

Alaska Rose Society, My hat is off to them for giving it a real go and succeeding.

For grafted roses, watch what root stock the company uses. If they don’t say, ask them. Multiflora is best in our area followed by Dr. Huey. Fortuniana does not winter well.

Be careful of time zones also. Not everyone is on Eastern Standard Time.

This list is in no particular order. If you think I left someone off who should be there, let the webmaster know.

Catalogs – OMG so many catalogs. Once they have your address, look out! Their partners will send out their catalogs too. YIPE!

Quality has been up and down over the years. They ship Bare Root or potted depending on the rose. They are also creating more and more roses on their own roots. They are good on returns replacing any plant that is unsatisfactory. You have probably 60 days to replace a plant. However, after replacing the same rose twice I got tired of it.

Partner Sites Park Seed Company, Wayside Gardens, Van Dykes Restorers.

Our Friend, Richard Anthony, bought out Whit Wells Mini-Flora Nursery and is really doing some great things.

Only Mini-Floras and Miniatures here which is great because there aren’t that many vendors anymore selling the exhibition level plants that is Richard’s speciality.

He is still developing his inventory and the website is not up to date.  You’ll have to email to see what Richard has. But, do take a look at the website to get an idea.  If you don’t see it, ask.

Our guarantee:   Your roses will arrive in good condition.   If they do not arrive as such, you have 14 days to notify us and we will either replace them or refund your money, our choice.  We cannot guarantee your roses to grow and thrive as we have zero control over their care and growing environment.

WATCH THE ABOVE. I HAVE BEEN STUCK when bareroots roses failed to leaf out well beyond the 2 week guarantee.   I am leary of purchasing roses from Rosemania because of this VERY LIMITED guarantee.   Robbie will hate me for saying that but I am being honest.

Vintage gardens  Roses –  out of business   ( I will say one thing,  when Vintage was clearing inventory I purchased a very difficult to find Hybrid musk Rose.  They sent a twig and I do mean a twig and charged $45.00.  To say I wasn’t happy is putting it mildly.  It died very quickly. I recouped my cost but really folks, I think I know why you went out of business. )

Pickering Nurseries (Canada)

Please note: Pickering Nurseries will not open for the 2015 season.

The rose growing industry has seen a great many changes in the last 10 years. Unfortunately, the majority of these changes were negative for both the companies involved and their bottom lines. The pesticide ban enacted by Ontario in the mid 2000’s, an increase in hybridizer royalty rates and how they are calculated, a glut of cheap US grown roses coupled with the Canadian government changing both import and export regulations (unable to ship to the US 2013 and additional ongoing issues with our root stock) have left me with no choice but to stop shipping roses for this season. Over the last several years Pickering Nurseries has been exploring alternative propagation techniques and changes to our business model. Both of these things are still a work in progress. We hope to have a small, core selection of rooted cuttings available in the spring of 2016.

It is also with great sadness we announce the passing of Joseph Schraven, my father and founder of Pickering Nurseries, on May 27th. (Pictured below)

In closing, I would like to extend thanks to all our long time customers and our colleagues in the industry and we hope to be able to serve you in the future.

Best regards, Joel Schraven Pickering Nurseries
