We are very lucky to have Dan Long from Brushwood Nurseries in Athens, Georgia. Our meeting is Monday, August 25, 2014 7:00pm at the North Royalton Public Library 5071 Wallings Road North Royalton, OH 44133. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.
Brushwood Nursery was founded in 1998 in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania by Dan Long. After many years in the nursery and greenhouse trade he decided to strike out on his own; a tradition in a family of entrepreneurs. The nature of the business has evolved with the advent of e-commerce. The first business plan was to offer clematis plants wholesale to other nurseries but Brushwood has become a retail specialty nursery offering hundreds of different vines and climbers shipped directly to gardeners using our web site. At this time we are only mail order and only retail.Propagation
The summer of 2010 saw a big change for Brushwood with the move to Becky’s (Dan’s wife) home town of Athens, Georgia where the nursery has much more land and a longer growing season outdoors.
Brushwood is a real nursery where we grow the plants right here. In most cases we propagate them ourselves, too! We’ve found this is the best way to maintain quality for our customers. The plants are grown in climate controlled greenhouses where the proper seasonal adjustments are made for plant health and winter dormancy where needed. Every effort is made to produce the highest quality crops possible.Working on your vines
We also believe strongly in protecting our environment. OMRI listed Organic pesticides are used whenever possible over harsh chemicals and vinegar with a little soap is Dan’s favorite herbicide! We buy electricity from wind turbine stations and use a vegetable oil furnace for some of our heating. Our newest greenhouse even uses Earth Tubes to draw warm air from the ground under the greenhouse for supplemental heat. Future plans include solar hot water collectors to warm the trays in propagation.
We are a small, family business with the intention to stay that way. As avid gardeners, we know and love the plants offered and will always do our best to provide great quality and service. Brushwood is consistently in the Top 5 in our category at The Garden Watchdog** and we have a loyal following of repeat customers. Give us a try and you’ll see why!

We all had a great time and learned something from Susan Ramsey, owner of Susan’s Daylilies. WRRS tries to have at least one speaker a year that is about companion plants to roses. Susan is obviously passionate about her subject and was very entertaining. Many of us are planning a visit to her farm in Sharon Center, Ohio.
